Nordie’s Half Yearly Sale: Shoe Edition

The one great downfall of my move to Boise is the lack of Nordstrom. There isn’t one in the ENTIRE state! Though, thankfully, they are putting in a Nordstrom Rack sometime in 2012. This means I have to get my Nordstrom fix through their website which isn’t as fun as getting to the store at 7am on the first day of their sale. C’est la vie.

So after browsing for much too long, I’ve collected a list of my absolute favorite deals on shoes at their Half Yearly Sale.

Alas, no normal student or recent grad could afford the hefty price. I’ve looked around for a more affordable pair of equal chicness, but have yet to find a pair.

Jeffrey Campbell vs. Forever 21: Who Wins?

I’m guilty. I admit it. I love affordable options, or “knock offs” as some may say. I would rather spend $28 on these Forever 21 leopard print wedges than $150 for a similar Jeffrey Campbell pair.

Granted, if you want quality that will last more than one season, go with the Jeffrey Campbell. But for a young unemployed student, $28 sounds pretty great. Not everyone agrees though. Especially Jeffrey Campbell.

He filed suit against Forever 21 for trade dress infringement (NOT trademark infringement as some other sites have said. That wouldn’t make any sense!) Trade dress allows for protection of the visual appearance of something, as long as it is not functional or is not the cheapest/most efficient way to create something. The trade dress must also be distinctive, meaning when you, the consumer, see it, you immediately think of Jeffrey Campbell and only Jeffrey Campbell.

While Jeffrey Campbell’s shoe design is not functional (in fact, that heel arguably makes the shoe less functional!), it isn’t very distinctive. A quick google search for leopard print wedges brings up multiple shopping options.

Basically, Jeffrey Campbell’s shoe is not distinctive. Therefore, he doesn’t qualify for trade dress protection and shouldn’t win.

Wedgies

Who loves wedges? Meeeee! These shoes go in and out of style so frequently, they should be called flip-flops. (ba da ching!)

Here is my argument for why wedges are perfect for fall. Let’s see if my lawyerly skills of persuasion are any good.

They (usually) keep your feet warm.
Even if they dont, they look adorable with socks and stockings so those will keep you warm.
They go well with pants and skirts so you can wear them in warm fall and cold fall weather.

How’d I do? You convinced? We’re my massive amounts of student loans worth it?

Well, enough chatter. Here are the shoes! BC Footwear is one of my favorite brands and one look at their wedges will convince anyone who still doesn’t agree with me.

Angel with an Attitude

When I get stressed, I sew. Some people clean, some exercise, but for me, sewing calms me down. With finals approaching, I’ve been sewing a lot. My latest project was this white tunic made from $3 pinstriped fabric. Since I’m still a novice, I like to make tunics because they have no zippers and achieving a good fit isn’t necessary. Plus, tunics are pretty versatile and can be worn with jeans, leggings, or tights.

For this look, I paired the tunic with my faux leather moto jacket from Forever 21, Vera Wang denim leggings from Kohls, wedges from Nine West, and a flower headband made by me.

I decided to be fancy by pleating the front of the top and adding a poofball detail to the left strap. I also tried it with a thin belt from Forever 21.

These shoes are definitely not comfortable, but they are so cute!
