Only a few more week or even days until school starts again! If you’ve already taken a US or World History course, you’ve probably learned that history is cyclical. It happens once, then it happens again and again. The same is true with fashion. Trends from one decade are out the next, only to be back in style a few years later. As the resurgence of the 80s craze dies down, the fun and fabulous 60s are upon us once again. In fact, stores like Peacocks have recently launched entire vintage-inspired collections featuring 60s fashion.

Besides the bright colors and interesting shapes, one of the best things about 60s fashion is the fact that it is more appropriate for class and less likely to break your school’s dress code. Thick straps and high necklines will cover up any naughty bra straps, long shirts will hide your stomach, and low hemlines will be more likely to pass the fingertip test. I know, it can be a pain dressing around your school’s dress code, but these 60s fashions make it fun!

It is time to come to terms with the fact that it is Back to School season. Every store and website you visit is plastered with it! This is the first year I am not going back to school. (Remember, I finally graduated in May.) But that doesn’t mean I can’t partake in the shopping excitement!

One of the trends that caught my eye was the vintage inspired boyfriend letterman cardigan. These cardigans are a little more fun than a plain boyfriend sweater, don’t you think?

The Evolution of Color Block Style

I’ve been reading around the fashion mags that there is a “new” trend: color block style. How can this style be new when it has been around for almost a century! If you don’t know what color block is, it’s when you have a piece with huge geometric sections of one or several colors. It all started in the 1920s with artist Piet Mondrian.

Then in the 1960s, Yves Saint Laurent introduced the color block dress, most certainly inspired by Mondrian’s work.

Style Files: Alison Brie

I have the biggest girl crush on Alison Brie. Some of you ladies may know her as Trudy Campbell from the AMC series Mad Men. Others may know her as Annie Edison, the cardigan queen from my favorite Thursday night show, Community. Wherever you’ve seen her, she shows off her adorable sense of style.

Don’t you just love her?

In Community, she plays up her character’s innocence with conservative necklines and covered shoulders (hence my nickname for her: cardigan queen).

I have always been a big fan of Lily Allen’s music and style, but I have only recently discovered her fashion boutique Lucy in Disguise. Started with her sister, it’s a haven for vintage lovers and is filled with gorgeous party dresses, accessories, and other fun finds from every era. The girls recently launched their own collection of vintage inspired clothing to complement the vintage gems in their boutique and I think they really hit the mark.
