How To Do a Red Lip

Since it is Valentine’s Day and love is in the air, I thought that it would be the perfect day to rock a red lip. Red lips are in girls and it is a gorgeous look paired with a really nude eye and glowing skin.

Red lips are constantly a struggle for most girls because there are so many variations of red lipsticks that it is hard for most to find one that compliments their skin tone.

So let’s find the right red lipstick for you. It’s easy and I am going to show you how.

First thing’s first: what is your undertone? Turn your wrist around and look at the underside of your arm. That is the best place to see your skin tone. I am very fair and I have a cool pink undertone. I rarely tan and if I do it is always a burn first (I know, don’t be jealous). An example of someone with this skin tone would be Megan Fox. If you fall under this category you will need a blue based red. I recommend MAC’s Dubonnet or Spice It Up.

For those of you beach bronzed babes with a yellow undertone like Penelope Cruz and Nicole Kidman, you would want a warm red with a yellow base. These tend to be a little brighter but can brighten up a sallow skin tends to happen in the cold months. My faves…MAC’s Ladybug or Russian Red.

For those of you who don’t want to dive into the deep end just yet there are a ton of red lip stains and glosses that will give you a hint of red and a lot of shine. Check out Cover Girl lip stain in Wild Berry Wink or Nars Bad Education.

Once you find the perfect red remember these tips:

1. Always exfoliate your lips. I do it every night by brushing my lips with my toothbrush.
This will prevent feathering…you know, like the way your grandmother’s lipstick looks right as she goes in for a biiiiiig kiss

2. Line your lips. Usually lip lining isn’t necessary if you are wearing a nude or sheer lip but it is a must with reds. Because most reds are highly pigmented it has a tendency to run, so let’s save the Joker look for Halloween.

3. Gloss. This is the perfect cherry on a red lipstick sundae. I like to keep it simple with a clear gloss so I stay true to the lipstick. You only need a small dab in the center and not on the entire lip or it will make your lipstick slide.

DC Fashion Expo

Most people don’t know this, but expos and showcases are a great resource for deals, discounts, and freebies. This past Saturday, the DC Fashion, Beauty & Lifestyle Expo took place smack in the middle of midtown.

After watching the fabulous fashion shows, I made sure to hit up the booths to score some goodies from local vendors.

In addition to the usual pens and other junk, I scored some lip balm, a $15 gift certificate to PR at Partners Salons and Spas and $10 off at Shoes by Lara. But my ultimate find was a $50 gift certificate to Auld Ennew, a brand new vintage and modern “gently loved” fashion boutique in Georgetown. Auld Ennew brought some samples from their boutique, one of which was a gorgeous green Betsey Johnson dress that I absolutely must have. Auld Ennew doesn’t open until November 1st, so it looks like I will have to wait to see what my $50 will get me.

Another fun part of expos are the contests. I entered to win all sorts of gift certificates and prizes ranging from makeovers to money. Sure, I will end up on some mailing lists, but I couldn’t pass up the chance to win free stuff.

And if you’re willing to make a day of it with your girlfriends, fashion and beauty expos offer free haircuts, makeup makeovers, manicures, and more. After hitting up the booths for an hour or two, you will be ready for a night on the town!

Only after I collected all my freebies did I make another pass to browse at the fashions. My favorite booth was South Moon Under.

Very cute, but very pricey. Their contest was a chance to go shopping in the store before it opens so you have it all to yourself. If I won, I wouldn’t be able to buy anything! haha.

Most of the people there were so stylish. I took a picture of Andrea, who I absolutely loved!

Isn’t her hair awesome? But not everyone was quite as well put together.

Yikes!

Betsey Johnson Fashion Show

Yesterday, I was front and center at the Betsey Johnson fashion show in DC! She is my all time favorite designer, and this collection was fun and fabulous. Along with her usual ruffles and bows, Betsey decided to punk it up with skulls and sequins this time around.

This funky tulle skirt was my favorite! It has an old-timey goth feel to it and looks fun to wear.

This dress was interesting, but I’d be afraid of stupid boys trying to unzip it.

I thought this dress was a little boring (gasp!). It’s nice and all, but Betsey has higher expectations to meet and ‘typical’ just doesn’t cut it.

Trend Watch: Asymmetrical Dresses
