Prom Dress Advice from Designer Maria Karicas

Following is an excerpt from an interview with dress designer Maria Karicas where she provides some prom dress advice. Maria is one of the designers for the popular Clarisse line of dresses. She studied at Parsons The New School for Design in New York City.

Interviewer: What advice would you give to a young woman on how to go about selecting the “right” prom dress?

Maria: I would tell her to go with something she likes, or something that one of her favorite stars or musicians has been wearing, as long as it works for her. Basically don’t just pick whatever is hot, pick something that appeals to you.

Interviewer: What is the easiest way to be the star at the prom without breaking the bank?

Maria: Just be yourself with your style. I think accessories are often overlooked, you can have the plainest dress but if it looks good on you and you accessorize well then you’ll look great. You shouldn’t just focus on the dress, it’s the biggest part of the outfit sure, but it is not the only part.

Interviewer: Is it what you wear or how you wear it?

Maria: I think it’s how you wear it. It has to look good on you, even if it is the most beautiful dress in the world, if it doesn’t work for your style or your body then it won’t look good.

Betsey’s Cherry Blossom Party

This year’s Cherry Blossom festival turned out much better than last year’s. I managed to forgo any similar catastrophes and instead went to the Cherry Blossom Party at Betsey Johnson’s Georgetown store. I arrived as they were setting up and got a peek at their springtime collection.

Their oh-so-lucky employees along with Miss DC got all gussied up in Betsey Johnson garb for the event. Could you imagine having the store as your dress up closet? So fun!

Unfortunately, I had to leave before the drinks and cupcakes arrived (parking is crazy expensive in Georgetown and I couldn’t afford to stay any longer!). But before I left, I snapped some pictures of my favorite finds, including lots of shoes!

Thank you to Jenny and the whole crew at the Georgetown store for making me feel so welcome!

Gotchya! I’m actually talking about wearing nude heels to prom. Nude pumps are an absolute must in your closet so buying them for prom is a long term investment. They look good with any color dress and make your legs look longer.
