Some people make fun of Gwyneth Paltrow’s GOOP newsletter, but I love it! I don’t do those Hollywood cleanses she sometimes talks about, but she presents some pretty nifty tips outside of beauty and health.

This week, GOOP was all about how to start a small business and instead of preaching from a soapbox about her successful business (that being GOOP), she elicited tips and advice from other used to be small business founders, such as Kevin Systrom from Instagram, Jessica Herrin from Stella & Dot, and Nina and Tim Zagat from (you guessed it) Zagat’s.

However, my favorite bits of advice were from Christene Barberich, co-founder and Editor-in-Chief of Refinery29.

Why do guys give us such a hard time about shopping? They’re just as bad!

Following is an excerpt from another interview with dress designer Maria Karicas where she discusses some of the latest fashion trends. Maria is one of the designers for the popular Clarisse line of dresses. She studied at Parsons The New School for Design in New York City.

Interviewer: What are the challenges of staying on top of the latest fashions? How do you have a ‘trendy’ dress produced in time before it goes out of style? Do you have secrets for staying ahead of the trends? In other words, if a movie makes a certain style an instantaneous ‘hit’, how are you ready to capitalize on that?

Maria: I think the secret is that you just have to always be paying attention. You always have to be aware of current tastes and current trends. You want to follow the trend and at the same time make it your own, but to do that you need to at least know where the trends are going. It’s like if you’re a stock broker, whether you’re busy or your on vacation you still have to pay attention to the financial news. Same thing applies with designers and fashion.

It all started at the 2011 NHL all-star fan fair in Raleigh, NC. I was standing in line to meet number 53 of the Carolina Hurricanes, Jeff Skinner. This kid had an incredible knockout rookie year, as well as being an attractive young man, making him the ultimate fan favorite at just 18 years old.
