As fashion weeks starting winding down, some are looking forward to the next trend in fashion. This week, I was thrilled to see so many bloggers focusing on the past -the history of fashion. An obvious passion of mine, vintage fashion has never been so influential. fête à fête reviews a gorgeous collection of vintage inspired jewelry. Fabulous Finds narrates a 1950s styled romp through Palm Springs. Oranges and Apples shares inspiring vintage Life magazine images. In politics, if you don’t learn from history, you’re destined to repeat it. In fashion, if you don’t learn from history, you won’t know you are repeating it!

Links à la Stocking Stuffers

This week, as I’ve been getting geared up for the holiday season’s shopping ( both loving and dreading it) via Black Friday and Cyber Monday, I couldn’t help but compare the posts to stocking stuffers. Why? Because it felt like a nice, sentimental hodge podge of little items that although different, still fit together into the the bigger equation, hence my new phrase, “Links a la Stocking Stuffers!” Although I jest, I love the variety of posts this week, from how to style and what to wear including Retro Chick’s guide to ’40s hair for holiday parties, CoolMamaStyle.com’s tuxedo jacket, The Coveted’s adventures in Century 21 and What to Wear’s Art Basel fashionable looks, to Prom Mafia’s run in with Black Friday and SwaySwaySway’s blissful tactics to keep your computer off on Cyber Monday.

Beyond Fashion

This weeks Links à la Mode blows away any preconceived ideas of the narcissistic fashion blogger posting endless outfit photos and magazine shoots  by covering a huge array of topics. Ranging from Dream Sequins whimsical birthday tea party to High Fashion Girls detailed examination of racism in fashion magazines, these posts demonstrate what we’re capable of and the communities we can build.

Of course, being fashion bloggers there are also some great outfits to be found and our bloggers this week have looked at: movies, from Bollywood to Sci fi; their pyjama drawers; and even their cleaning cupboard in their ceaseless search to bring you fashion inspiration.

Our Differences Unite Us

Coming off of Ashe Mischief’s Independent Fashion Blogger’s Post (Good Cop/Bad Cop: Participating in Links a la Mode), you all brought your A-game in posting the links a la mode — which made it extra hard to edit! This week, the theme that I saw emerging throughout the posts is one of celebrating our unique diversity; each site has a different take and approach to fashion, art, beauty, media, lifestyle, music – you name it! From the dry shampoo trials at Dramatis Personae to Le Petite Cecile’s observations regarding the bleached eyebrow trend, you all brought a new perspective to each topic at hand, a sign that indicates how wonderful and creative the blogosphere truly is. Get even more excited for Halloween with cmykaboom and Idiosyncratic Style costume suggestions that are sure to make you smile, along with DenimDebutante’s discovery of the “zipholder”.  All in all, one things’ for certain: we’ve got an amazing community of bloggers!

Fashion Roller-Coaster

Wow… we’ve got an interesting bunch this week… word from fashion weeks has put us on a roller coaster from the creepy toenails on Shoe Daydreams to the stunning Alexander McQueen on ferOHHHsh, a much needed shopping bill of rights on dramatis personae, and Bay Area Style File wonders why cigarette cases are marketed to teens at Urban Outfitters. We’ve also got some new faces in our round up including one of my favorite French blogs, Morning by Foley whose beautiful photography reminds me how sweet fashion really is.

There’s something about the fall season that brings both calming and chaotic feelings. As we kiss our wild summer nights goodbye, we say hello to late night study sessions and longer days in the office. As New York Fashion Week closes and we’re trying to catch up on the latest collections, London Fashion Week kicks off. This week’s round up of Links à la Mode from Independent Fashion Bloggers embodies a little bit of everything in an effort to give you a breather in between the deceiving calm that comes with fall. We’ve got runway reviewes ranging from Fashion Pulse’s take on Tory Burch to Fasshonaburu’s humorous experience at the Snuggie fashion show, and Style Amour rated the top five most disappointing Spring 2010 collections.  There are also a few new DIY’s worth checking out, especially the Maison Michael bunny ears post from Monoxious. Playing Dress Up

I’m in the process of moving to New York City, just in time for Fashion Week, which kicks off in two weeks. In browsing through all the link submissions this week, I couldn’t help but tie it all back to one very important question lingering on my mind – what the heck am I going to wear?

This week’s round-up speaks to the art of ”getting dressed.” We have inspiration posts from Cake not Coke and Style on the Street, style how-to’s from Denim Debutante (she was also quoted in the WSJ this week, here!) and The Coveted, and a variety of interviews. One of my favorites was Prom Mafia’s DIY for converting your boyfriend’s tee into a tunic – love it!

If you’ve never heard of a trade secret, it is something you own and can sell or license as long as it is kept secret.  Once it is shared with the public, the trade secret loses all of its value.   The Independent Fashion Blogger Community is a fantastic resource for us bloggers to share and borrow inspiration and advice, but that openness goes against everything I’ve learned in law school.

I find myself torn between embracing the online opensource culture and vehemently protecting my new online business venture.  By sharing my trade secrets, they aren’t secret anymore and lose any value they once held.  And what sort of business strategy is that?!  Yet without the openness of the IFB community, my blog would not have grown to where it is now and I truly appreciate all that I have learned so far.

This dichotomy is causing a sense of confusion and guilt that I don’t know how to resolve. I’m asking you, fashion bloggers, how do you deal with this?  How do you participate in the IFB community without giving too much or taking too much?
