Sewing for Beginners

November 14th, 2009 | Posted by

I’m definitely a novice seamstress.  I can’t even put in a zipper yet. But I love checking out the “easy sew” patterns like Very Easy Vogue because…well, I think their title explains it all.

They are usually about $12, but often go on sale for half that.

And since you’re making the piece yourself, you can change it up a bit to fit your own style.

You can even find patterns vintage and accessory pieces. Isn’t that green hat amazing?

Hillary Duff has her own line of patterns that are cute and easy to make.

I made this dress as part of a Learn to Sew class I took a few summers ago.

I made the neckline out of rope to give it a bit more personality.

  1. If you have a Joann’s, you can get Vogue patterns for about $3 if you’re patient and willing to wait for the right sale. (Butterick & McCall’s are about $1-2).

If you’re a newbie as sewing like I am, I find the Wendy Mullin’s guides to be AMAZING.

  2. Yes yes yes! A thousand times yes aha I recently did a ‘Dressmaking for Beginners’ class, but unfortunately it was only 5 lessons long (they were 2 hours each) and I was incredibly ill last week and could barely walk, let alone sew, so I missed the very last lesson!
I’m making a skirt, but thankfully my mum knows how to do everything so she should be able to help me :)

I am quite proud of what I’ve managed to do though x)

The dress you made is amazing :D

Ashe- thanks for the suggestions! I can use all the guidance I can get. :)

Art D. – I hope you post about your skirt when it’s done. I’d love to see it! :)

I recommend finding a copy of Simplicity’s sewing book. They’ve been making it for years so you may well find an old copy at a thrift store very inexpensively and it’s a great resource if you’re learning.
