Jobs in Fashion
June 22nd, 2009 | Posted by Queen BeeIf you’re like me, you live and breathe for fashion. It’s your raison d’etre. You love to research up and coming trends and make your own style statements. If only this passion could pay the bills (and we’re not talking about working in retail). Well, why can’t it?
There are all sorts of jobs in fashion like fashion design, fashion merchandising, costume design, personal stylist, fashion photography, fashion journalism, and modeling. Like any job, you need to study and work hard to become skilled in the position you wish to pursue.
Here are a couple examples of internships I found on FreeFashionInternships.com:

The intern will have the opportunity to learn how a creative services department is run and will participate in departmental meetings. The ideal candidate has a strong interest in design, is proficient with cutting and mounting skills and is able to put together clean and professional comps. Intermediate InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop skills are preferred. We are seeking an intern that is available at least 3 days a week starting ASAP through August 14th. This internship is unpaid and for current college students only. Interested candidates should send cover letter (including your availability) and resume to internships@hfmus.com.
Obviously, most fashion internships are in places like New York, LA, and Paris, but if you aren’t in one of those cities, don’t give up. There are other ways to gain experience in fashion:
- Start your own fashion line on etsy
- Go to fashion school
- Contribute to a fashion blog like Prom Mafia. (ps- I’m looking for high school bloggers! If you are interested, get the application here.)
And if that doesn’t sound appealing to you, come up with your own idea! But DEFINITELY don’t give up or listen to people who try to tell you otherwise. It’s your life and you should do what makes you happy!
What is your dream job?

My dream job is to be a photographer. If we’re gonna get specific, I’d say a pin-up/glamour photographer, but I love all aspects of it!
I’m improving my art, and when I’ve done that I might design clothing, but whatever I try and get onto paper at the moment never looks the same as in my head! But I’m getting there
Then I can start MAKING. Haha

Thanks for the tips. My daughter wants to be a fashion designer. She is young and I have her working on drawing to start. It looks like I need to get her on the computer now too.
